Shafrazi Gallery

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Shafrazi Gallery appears in Andy Warhol’s diary as a venue for Keith Haring’s work and for a socially distinctive closing gathering. The account of the November 13, 1982, event captures the exhibition’s audience as well as Warhol’s wary, personal response to the party that followed.

The Keith Haring Exhibition

Chris Makos invited Warhol and others to the gallery for the closing of a Keith Haring show. Warhol identified Haring as the artist whose figures appeared across the city as graffiti, placing the exhibition within a practice already visible beyond gallery walls. The diary records the closing as a specific occasion rather than describing the gallery’s broader program or organization.

Audience and Gathering

Warhol noted that about 400 Black children were present, associating their attendance with the boyfriend of the person he referred to as Chris. His description compared the gathering to the 1960s while emphasizing the difference in the crowd’s racial makeup. This is Warhol’s own compressed, racially marked framing of the scene, not an independently verified account of the attendees or the gallery’s audience more generally.

The Basement Party and a Separate Opening

A party for the show followed in a basement lit in blue. Warhol was invited downstairs but declined, explaining that he expected the light to turn his hair completely blue. The small, practical concern gives the diary’s account an individual counterpoint to the scale of the crowd: the gallery appears both as a site of a large public gathering and as a place whose atmosphere Warhol chose not to enter fully.

A later diary entry describes a Keith Haring opening at the Fun Gallery, a separate venue on the Lower East Side. There, Warhol compared Haring’s pictures hung against a background of his own pictures to his Whitney retrospective, where works had been hung over his Cow wallpaper. That later exhibition belongs to the Fun Gallery, not Shafrazi Gallery; it provides context for Haring’s gallery activity without establishing a further event at Shafrazi.
